What we find on North Little Rock jobs

North Little Rock sits right across the river from Little Rock, and a lot of our calls here come from the older neighborhoods. Park Hill goes back to the 1920s and 1930s, and Lakewood grew up around its lakes, so we often find driveways, walks and steps that have been patched more than once over a base nobody's touched in decades. Builders and property owners call us too, for house slabs, footings and parking areas, and we get plenty of patio calls from homeowners up toward Sherwood.

On an older lot, the old concrete tells me most of what I need to know. Where it sank or cracked is usually where the dirt under it moved or the water ran, and that's what we fix before anything new gets poured.

Working in North Little Rock: permits, licenses and what sets the price

Building and remodeling permits in North Little Rock come from the city's Planning Department. I check with them about what your job needs before we set a date, and when a permit is required we handle the paperwork, so it's already built into the schedule I give you. You can check us, too. The city requires every business working inside city limits to hold a city business license, so ask any contractor for theirs. We're fully licensed and insured.

What moves the price is mostly what's under the job. That means whether an old slab has to come out, how much dirt we dig and how much base we haul in, how big and thick the slab is, how close the truck can get, and whether you want a plain broom finish, the light texture that keeps it from getting slick, or stamped and colored work. The schedule turns on the permit, the dig and the curing, the wait while fresh concrete gains strength before you use it. I'll walk your job with you at the estimate and give you your own number. We do the same work over in Maumelle and the other cities around here.

  • On older lots we dig out to firm ground and pack the subgrade, what the slab sits on, in layers, because a base that's only raked level settles with the dirt and takes the slab with it.
  • Before forms go up, I check where the water runs on your lot so the slab falls away from the house, not toward it.
  • If the budget's tight, cut the finish, not the base. Nobody sees the base after pour day, but it decides whether the slab stays flat.
  • Where a driveway carries cars, we set rebar, steel bars inside the slab that hold it together, so if a crack opens it stays tight instead of spreading.
  • We cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a planned place to crack, right after the pour, because late or skipped joints let cracks pick their own spot.

Concrete questions from North Little Rock homeowners

Will my new concrete driveway in North Little Rock crack like the old one?

It may get a hairline crack, since nearly all concrete does, but the deep cracks and sunken sections on old driveways usually come from a soft base, bad drainage or missing joints. We handle those the way we laid out above, and we start pours early in the day so the top isn't rushed in the heat and left weak and dusty.

How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

Usually about a week, and you can walk on it in a day or two. That wait is curing, and parking on it early is how edges chip and the surface gets marked. I'll tell you when it's ready for your car.

Does concrete work downtown in North Little Rock need special approval?

Yes, if it changes the outside of a downtown building, like new steps at the entrance. The North Little Rock History Commission has to approve any exterior construction on downtown buildings in the area between Poplar, 9th Street, South Broadway and North Broadway. If your property's in that area, we get that approval lined up before we schedule the pour.
