Concrete Pool Decks in Little Rock AR - a deck that drains away and grips wet feet

Planning a new pool, or tired of a deck that's cracked, slick or pooling water? We build one that drains right and grips wet feet.

A curved pool edge is lined with tan stone coping beside a speckled concrete deck and several lounge chairs.

What goes into a good concrete pool deck in Little Rock?

A concrete pool deck is the slab around your pool. In Little Rock we build it to carry water away from your house without washing dirty runoff back into the pool, with a surface your feet can grip when it's wet.

Most calls start one of two ways. Either a new pool is going in and you need the deck around it, or the old deck is cracked, settling or holding puddles by the back door. On an old deck, we find what's moving and fix that first, because a new surface over a slab that's still settling just cracks again.

The price mostly comes down to how big the deck is, how many curves and corners it has, how much digging and base work your ground needs, whether an old deck comes out first and which finish you pick. The schedule turns on settling the layout, any permit the job needs and curing, which is the wait while new concrete hardens before it can take traffic. When I come out, you get your own number for your deck.

What happens when you call about a pool deck in Little Rock?

Here's who you'll deal with, from the first visit to the walk-through.

I come out and give the estimate myself

I've run this business since 2020, and I still walk each job before we price it. We talk through finishes and layout right there by the pool, and you get a number built on your deck, not a guess over the phone.

Our own crew pours, and I check the prep first

Our crew handles the dig, the forms and the pour, with me running the job on site. I check the base before the concrete truck comes, and when it's done I walk the finished deck with you.

Licensed and insured for work on your home

Arkansas law counts anyone who bids on or runs improvements to an existing house and the yard around it as a home improvement contractor, so ask anyone bidding your deck about their license. We're fully licensed and insured, and you can call (501) 274-1092 to set up a visit.

How we build your concrete pool deck

Before we set a single form, I sit down with you and lay out the coping, the cap along the pool edge, along with the skimmers, drains, pipes, equipment pad and joints. That way water heads away from the house and the pool, and the panels come out shaped to resist cracking instead of long skinny pieces that break at the corners. Then we help you pick a finish with good grip that stays comfortable on bare feet. If the budget's tight, I'd cut the fancy finish before I'd cut base work, because nobody sees the base on day one but it decides whether the deck sinks with the dirt later.

A pool deck usually ties into the rest of the yard. If you need concrete steps from the back door down to the deck, we pour them with the same plan for water. If a pool house or covered kitchen is part of the project, our slab foundation building work covers the slab it sits on.

  • Coping, skimmers, drains, pipes, equipment pad and joints laid out with you before forms go up
  • Dirt dug out and the base packed firm under the whole deck
  • A slope that sends water away from the house without draining into the pool
  • Joints placed around curves, drains and corners, cut on time
  • A finish picked with you for grip and how it feels underfoot

From bare dirt to a deck you can use

Most of the work happens before the concrete shows up, and that's on purpose.

  1. Dig out and pack the base

We dig down and pack the subgrade, the soil and gravel the deck sits on, because a base that's just raked level settles with the dirt. Loose fill under a pool deck is how you end up with a sunken corner and a trip edge.

  2. Set forms, slope and steel

We set the forms so the deck falls away from the house and keeps runoff out of the pool, then place rebar, the steel that holds the slab together if it cracks, where the job calls for it. If you've got a salt-water pool, tell me, because the chloride can work on steel in the deck and metal fixtures around it.

  3. Pour, finish and cut the joints

We time the pour so the top doesn't dry out before we finish it, since a rushed top turns weak and dusty later. Control joints, the lines that give the slab a planned place to crack, get cut on time so cracks don't wander where nobody chose.

  4. Let it cure

The new deck needs its curing time to gain strength, and we'll tell you when it's ready for bare feet and patio chairs. Using it too soon is how good concrete gets marked up.

Pool deck questions we hear in Little Rock

How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Little Rock?

Installing a concrete pool deck across the US usually costs about $10.10 to $12.40 per square foot. That's a national going rate, not our price, so your own number comes from the free estimate at your house.

Which pool deck finish is best for bare feet?

A textured finish that isn't too dark usually works best, because the deck will be wet and walked barefoot, and very dark finishes can get uncomfortable in the sun. Broom, textured, exposed aggregate, coatings, overlays and decorative finishes all differ in grip and heat, so weigh grip and color together. A broom finish, fine ridges dragged into the top with a stiff broom, is the plain pick for traction.

How do I apply for a building permit in Little Rock?

You apply online through Dynamic Portal, the City of Little Rock Planning and Development Department's system for applying for and managing building permits. I check with the city or county office for your address about what your deck needs, and when a permit is required, we handle the paperwork.

How often does a pool deck expansion joint need new caulk?

Replace it whenever it cracks, pulls away or wears out, and one coping maker's guide notes most flexible joint caulks last five to ten years. The same guide says to look over the expansion joint every year. Keep the deck drains clear, rinse off chemical splashes and keep any sealer or coating up the way its maker says, too.

Building a pool deck on Little Rock clay

A lot of ground in Arkansas is clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks as it dries, and slabs feel that movement. In Pulaski County's soil survey figures, 25% of mapped soil acres rate high for shrink and swell and another 11% rate very high. Many of these problems can be handled with steps taken before construction, which is why we plan the dig, the base and the joints early instead of patching later.

We're based in Little Rock and work across the cities around it in central Arkansas, including North Little Rock, Maumelle, Sherwood, Bryant and Benton. If you don't see your city on the site, call and ask.
