Concrete Contractor in Sherwood, AR - Driveways and Slabs Built on a Solid Base

Caliber Little Rock Concrete Company is a concrete contractor based in Little Rock, AR. We pour driveways, patios, steps and slabs for Sherwood homes, and we get the dig, the base and the water plan right first.

Red-brown stamped concrete patio and walkway curve across the lawn to steps at a light-sided house.
Dark gray concrete steps lead to a white house entrance, with a light concrete sidewalk and shrubs in front.

Sherwood, the way we see it on the job

Sherwood is a city of neighborhoods north of the river, just up from North Little Rock. Most of our calls here come from homeowners who need a driveway, a patio, a walk or steps, and a few come from builders.

The houses run from older ranch homes on settled streets to newer subdivisions with wide garages and long drives. On both we see the same things: a driveway sunk at one corner, a patio that tips toward the back door, a walk cracked straight across. Most of the time the concrete was fine and the ground under it wasn't. A lot of the dirt in central Arkansas has clay in it that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries, and a base that was only raked flat moves right along with it. That's why on a Sherwood job the dig and the plan for water get as much of my time as the pour.

Concrete work we do for Sherwood homes and businesses

Working in Sherwood: permits, licenses and what sets the price

The City of Sherwood issues building permits for homes and businesses inside city limits, and when a job needs one, we don't pour until it's issued, so the permit can set your start date. I check with the city, or the county office if you're outside city limits, about what your job needs, and we handle the paperwork when a permit's required. Before you hire anybody, ask for two things you can check: a state contractor license and a business license from the city.

Our crew comes up from Little Rock and works the cities on this side of the river, Jacksonville included. Price comes down to how big the slab is, how much old concrete we break out and haul off, how deep we dig to reach firm ground, and the finish, where a plain broom finish with its light brushed texture for grip costs less than stamped or colored work. The schedule turns on the permit and the weather, since we won't pour into rain. I'll give you the number for your job when I come out to look at it.

  • Watch where the water goes in a hard rain. If it runs toward the house now, we slope the new slab the other way before we pour.
  • If the budget's tight, cut the fancy finish, not the base. You can dress up plain concrete later, but a weak base means tearing the slab out.
  • In hot weather we pour early, because midday heat dries the top too fast and leaves it weak and dusty.
  • Plan to park somewhere else during curing, the wait while the concrete hardens enough to take a car, and I'll tell you how long at the visit.
  • Tell us about anything buried, like a sprinkler line or an old pad, since we'd rather know before the dig than find it with the machine.

Sherwood concrete questions

Does a concrete contractor need a state license in Arkansas?

Yes, for most home jobs. Under the state's contractor licensing rules, residential building contractors and home improvement contractors need a license from the Residential Contractors Committee unless they're exempt, and home improvement covers repair, alteration, removal, demolition or additions at an existing single-family home and its property. Commercial work falls under a separate state law once a job's labor and materials reach $50,000 or more. We're fully licensed and insured, so ask me about it at the estimate.

Will my new concrete driveway crack like the old one?

Hairline cracks happen in most concrete, but the sinking, breaking kind usually starts in the base, so that's where we put the work. We dig to firm ground, pack the base, set rebar and cut control joints while the concrete's fresh so cracks follow the lines. If your old drive failed, I'll tell you why at the visit so you know what's different this time.

Where can I see zoning or flood maps for my property in Sherwood?

The city's Sherwood Master Map is an online map with zoning, land use, sewer, stormwater and more. For flood maps, FEMA says its online flood map tools are the best place to start for official flood hazard determinations. Both are worth a look before a big slab.
